Interzone report of February 2005

French version

Previous report of January

Next report of March

Hi all,

I have been stuck on a bed since 15 days with a twisted vertebra which prevented me from sitting and standing up for a long time, and could not use a computer. So I could not write the report sooner, and it is a short one this month. Paul called for Dr Benway, and the result seeems better than the one of the men of the art, so I now am able to send it. :-) (I hope that my doctor will not sue Bill for illegal practice of medicine).

by Paul O'DONOVAN

Just after sending the report of January, I have had a printer problem , both printers decided to go on stike, so to sent one to repair. Hence, I could not make a part of the prints I had planned : booklet of the CD compilation 1, calendars, etc. So this was a month "without".

Whatever, here is the result.

Last letter of Yage :

Anthony Rousseau has to translate in English a Burroughs' letter to Allen Ginsberg : "Last letter of Yage". Rather than translating it, it'd be better to have the original version written by Bill. If anybody has it, thanks for sending it to Anthony at anthony_rousseau01@yahoo.fr

Erratum : After the sending of the report, Anthony tells me that he wrote this "Last letter of Yage" for a video he is going to make. So this is not an unknown text by Burroughs. I have translated it, but we need an English corrector for it to be in good English. Thanks for any help.

Ricardo Mbarak 's lecture : "Art and New Media in Lebanon"

Ricardo gave a lecture on sunday Feb 6, 2005. 16h-17h at the House of World Cultures, Berlin at the festival Transmediale.

Presentation of the lecture:

Ricardo Mbarak spoke about the emerging artists' approaches and positions in today's Lebanese multi-cultural society, where religion, politics, war and post-war environments are always affecting the identity and belonging crisis. The aim of the lecture is presenting a panorama on the Lebanese current art scene dealing with new media.

Mbarak conciders that art in Lebanon is strongly related to socio-politics. So to see how art is reflecting society, he started the lecture by presenting an historical background of Lebanon since its independance day till today's situatio. This is to give an idea about what are the historical icons our generation share today as part of their common geographical and historical context. While of course not all of them have the same translation or understanding of this and that event they or others caused.

R. Mbarak then rose the issue of how the art and cultural institutions are initiating projects and giving subventions, and how some individual efforts are investigated to organize new media events, with an overview on the public, critics and press roles. He focused on how the new technology of information and communication is cultured, specifically via his new media work as well as the works of colleagues with whom he is in direct contact.

Information about Transmediale Festival:

transmediale is the biggest and most significant festival for art and the creative usage of digital media in Germany. Once a year the festival presents new and outstanding projects in the field of digital culture and provides reflexions on the role of digital technologies in contemporary society.
