Interzone report of July 2005
|
For the new comers: The reports of Interzone contain the monthly activities of the members of the group in different domains. As we are about 400 people in the world, all different, the whole might appear at first sight as an incongruous medley. For more information on the subjects developed here, please refer to the previous reports since 1997 in the page Information on Interzone |
Hi all,
In spite of the Eastern time and holidays, the Zone has been quite active this month : no rest for the braves !
Interzone: Eight years after :
August 2nd is the eight anniversary of Burroughs departure and the start of Interzone. For the people who jumped in the running train, thanks for referring to the first pages of the story of the group and the monthly reports written since, where the whole is visible, at http://www.inter-zone.org/presentation.html and http://www.interpc.fr/mapage/westernlands/infzone.html . Thanks to the members for making it happen, for the huge amount of contributions, for their involvement and their friendship. Each month making the report I am bewildered by the amount of creativity here, and the fact is that each report seems to be bigger than the previous ones.
When Interzone started in 1997, I could not figure out that the adventure would go on so long. But I guess that if it is so, the group has a function and answers the expectations of the members. It keeps going actuality on Burroughs even if he is not physically present. Under this aspect, knowing that Burroughs has written quite a lot on death and draw maps of the after death territories (“The Western Lands”), and knowing he used the non-Aristotelian function of writing which consists in making things happen through the relation between the author and the readers, he might actually have an active role in it and use the Zone to go on the experiments with us.
Beyond the activities of the members, it is a good demonstration of the efficiency and accuracy of the references of thinking of the group : Burroughs’ spirit which has impulsed all this, and whose books and teachings are the base we refer to and apply, and the French biologist Henri Laborit’s work on the structure of living organism, which is used for the coordination and model of relation. Those two authors, who both referred to Alfred Korzybski’s general semantics, are complementary.
I have no idea about what Interzone represents out of the group of actual members whom I relate to. To me, it is the actualization of a Johnson family. It seems some consider it as a movement part of contre-culture. Out of the group, this has led to a number of unpleasant reactions from people who do not introduce themselves. The present game they are playing consists in unsubscribing me from the list I am part of, which reveals itself completely inefficient, as I immediately subscribe again in one click. There also is a number of spasm being sent in my name and not coming from my computer : at the moment, I am receiving mails from “Baudron”, nearly one everyday : see the new pages of “Virus and spasm senders” where I put some on line : http://www.interpc.fr/mapage/westernlands/virussenders13.html & http://www.interpc.fr/mapage/westernlands/virussenders14.html. Strange to see how some people like to loose their time and energy, when others use theirs to have fun building things together and minding their own business. But, as Burroughs said, some people just cannot bear the ones who mind their own business, because they have not more business of their own than a small-pox virus.
Visit of Philip Beitchman and Lionel Bloom:
As for me, it is a great pleasure and fun to coordinate it, and I am proud to relate to the people who are part of it, with whom the relations have been just great during those years. What strikes me the most is the ability of the Zoners here to get organized as a group and to build something collective, in spite of the differences of nationalities and countries. As a result, Interzone has become a virtual country. Though the contacts between the members are not only virtual : Philip Beitchman and Lionel Bloom came for a visit yesterday.
Philip is an American writer from Brooklyn, translator of Jean Baudrillard(“Fatal Strategies”) and Paul Virilio (“The Aesthetics of Disappearance). He wrote “Alchemy of the Word” and “The View from Nowhere” on the Kabbala, and sent a text some years ago on Burroughs and Naked Lunch : “The Structure of Nothingness- William Burroughs' Naked Lunch”, on line at http://www.interpc.fr/mapage/westernlands/nl.html
Lionel, also American has a jazz bar in Paris, the SWAN BAR, in the center of Montparnasse : 165 bvd de Montparnasse, Paris 6e, 01 44 27 05 84. Both have been friends since college. As students, they were living at the Beat Hotel, at the time Burroughs was there with Brion Gysin.

Interzone collage ?
I would like to make a big collage with Zoners pics which you guys sent during those years, for Interzone posters and tee-shirts, but I am not good enough at it and suggest that Paul makes it. As I shall not use anybody’s pic without your permission, let me know if you are ok for it. Those who want to be part of it can send their pictures.
Paul O’Donovan’s tee-shirts :
Paul has started to print paintings on tee shirt and sent one to me. If Zoners are interested, they can get some from him as well. The tee-shirt is very good quality. You can join him at odonovan@evemail.net . I am adding this to the catalogue of Interzone : http://www.inter-zone.org/catal1.html. See below the ones worn by Paul and your reporter.

Interzone song :
For this eighth anniversary, I wrote a song on Interzone. If you like it, musicians are welcome to adapt it. This way we might make several songs and make a CD with them. Here are the lyrics :
|
Interzone song
Refrain :
Interzone Interzone Est un réseau étonnant De gens entreprenants De Beyrouth à Singapour De Las Vegas à Strasbourg Interzone c’est épatant.
|
1
Quand Burroughs s’en est allé En août 97 Nous nous sommes rassemblés A travers un site internet
|
2
On a fait des dreamachines Avec une feuille en carton Une ampoule et une platine Les ondes alpha c’est tout bon
|
3
On a fait nos propres sites Pour y mettre nos créations Nos textes nos livres nos musiques Nos tableaux et nos chansons
|
|
4
|
|
|
Interzone song (rough translation to be adapted)
Refrain :
Interzone Interzone Is an astonishing group Of enterprising people From Beyrouth to Singapore From Las Vegas to Strasbourg Interzone is wicked.
|
1
When Burroughs went away In August 97 We gathered Through an internet site
|
2
We made dreamachines With a cardboard sheet, A bulb and a record player Alpha waves are just great.
|
3
We built our own sites To host our creations Our texts our books our musics Our paintings and our songs
|
|
4
Then we made cut-ups, We cut the words up To stop the machine To deprogram the scenario
|
5
General semantics Which we owe to Korzybski Helps us to cheer up And to rebuild economy
|
6
If you are fed up With the present you are dictated to Create your own reality Join us with Burroughs.
|
General semantics :
I am adding some more pages in the site « La sémantique générale pour tous » at http://semantiquegenerale.free.fr/ about economy, my job as a psychotherapist and seminars. Yannick Chosse is going to put them on line in the following days, so you can see them then.
The next part of the investigation on the new rules of economy at http://www.geocities.com/clemsnide23/econona1.html is in preparation, see next month.
