The sphere at the top represents the original spacetime event that we are to perceive (noumena, essentially corresponding to
Kant's ding-an-sich), and the first spheres receiving connections represent animal nervous systems' first impressions of that event (the phenomena of the dog on the left and the three humans on the right).Holes in the first sphere are salient features of the spacetime event: not all holes have strings emanating from them because not everything is knowable by us (uncertainty) and not all strings connect to our spheres of perception because our perceptions of even the visible are always limited (we can't see 360 degrees at once, and never can we see the insides of an object without cutting it open and therefore altering it
Notice the dog on the left doesn't connect these strings of experience to anything further: he is trapped in the present moment, never able to escape inrushing perceptions through symbolization, reflection, or abstraction. Without language, the animal mind will develop maps of its environment based on vision or smell or other direct, concrete representations of its immediate physical surroundings. The humans go further, connecting phenomenal objects with simple labels: the dog, the ball, the park, etc. These are in turn related to a more abstract level of consideration, classes of objects: pets, games, places, etc.
It must be observed that at each level further from the original spacetime event, the generalizations made about the event become increasingly arbitrary, and therefore potentially a less accurate mapping or representation of what's "really" going on (we can't have ultimate or total knowledge, but we can approach a very basic level of agreement on concrete observations of physical reality).
Again not all the strings connect up because not all our words fit into all of our categories: every level of description will fall short of the more concrete observations which inspired them, and no description can capture every aspect of an event. That last point is the most important to keep in mind when considering this diagram, for us to meditate on our scientific epistemology- events are profoundly uncertain, our observations are necessarily generalized and incomplete, and that cultural "knowledge" from above in the chain can interfere with lower-level physical perceptions of the outside words.
